SOCCER NEWS

On Sunday, October 28, St Cormac’s ‘A’ team played host to Gorey Celtic and though they started well, it took almost half an hour before they took the lead through a well taken penalty. The Gorey keeper had handled the ball outside the area and Mick Sweeney shot a text-book free to the top corner. The red carding of their keeper spurred Celtic on and they levelled just before halftime. The other side of the break, they pulled ahead to lead by 2-1 only to have the ever dependable Jamie Dempsey-Doyle convert our second penalty of the day. A header from Glen McEvoy gave us the lead and Jamie scored his second goal to make it all but impossible for Gorey to come back. Brendan Burke score an insurance goal near the end to ensure our lads collected maximum points with a 5-2 win.

The ‘B’ team were also had home and had to battle hard to beat Shamrocks. Like the ‘A’ team, the lads seemed to be the superior side but it was deep into the second half before a smashing shot from Seán Walsh gave us the lead. Great work between the posts from Darragh Murphy maintained the lead and helped the ‘B’s maintain their unbeaten run of five wins and one draw.
