DIASPORA’S LONDON NIG

- BRENDAN KEANE

MEMBERS of Wexford County Council travelled to London recently to attend the annual buffet dance of the London Wexford Association (LWA).

The dinner event, which this year was held at the Mazenod Club in Kilburn, on Saturday, October 20, is organised each year to enhance the strong links between the Model County and the English capital city – which many people from Wexford have made their home over the years.

For this year’s dinner the master of ceremonies was Lucia Butler, who extended a warm welcome to the visitors who were representing their respective districts.

She also extended apologies on behalf of the association’s chairperson, Tommy Harrell, who was unable to attend due to ill-health.

Ms Butler wished Mr Harrell a speedy recovery and her sentiments were shared by those in attendance.

The Wexford delegation included: Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy (Enniscorthy MDC); Cllr Keith Doyle (Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council); Cllr Malcolm Byrne (Gorey MDC); Cllr Robbie Ireton (Gorey MPC); Cllr Larry O’Brien (New Ross MPC) and Cllr George Lawlor (Wexford Borough Council).

There is always a relaxed atmosphere at the event and this year Cllr Lawlor contributed to the night’s entertainment with brilliant renditions of beautiful Irish ballads which, according to a spokesperson for the LWA, ‘overwhelmed the audience’.

Music entertainment was provided by Pat Nugent and Mustang and the association acknowledged the support of the venue manager Anna Redmond, who is from Wexford, and the staff.

Justin Ffrench and other sponsors were acknowledged for their ongoing support and Emily Cronin was praised for the lovely food that was enjoyed by everyone attending.

The LWA will hold its Annual General Meeting at 8.30 p.m. on Monday, January 7, in the Done Our Bit Club, 128 Maygrove Road, Kilburn.
