GARDAÍ TO CRACK DOWN ON DRUGS AND TRAFFIC OFFENCES

- By SARA GAHAN

THE arrival of six members of An Garda Siochana to Gorey town has allowed for the establishment of a dedicated drugs unit in the North Wexford area. This is the first time in years that the district has had its own drugs unit.

Sergeant Stephen Ennis said they are aware drugs is an issue in the Gorey area and the six new garda members is an effort to address it.

The new members are Sgt Tom Barrett, Sgt Robert Cleary, Garda Elliot Malone and three new recruits – William Lynch, Aaron O’Neill and Kyrie O’Neill.

‘The arrival of all of these (gardaí)has also allowed us to expand our Roads Policing Unit too,’ said Sgt Ennis.

He said garda numbers in Gorey have increased by nine members over the past year which is the biggest swell in numbers in eleven years.

The three new recruits, William from Cork, Aaron from Kilkenny and Kyrie from Clonmel, are looking forward to becoming a part of the community. They are currently operating under the guidance of a tutor and will attend classes with training staff.

They will also sit in on inquests and court hearings as part of their probation period. After their two year probation period, they will be given a BA in Applied Policing.

Sgt Ennis said that William served in the navy prior to joining the guards while Kyrie won the commissioner’s prize in Templemore in her group for the highest overall mark.

Sgt Tom Barrett from Cork is newly promoted, having served in the Wicklow division for the last ten years. Sgt Robert Cleary from Tinahely was previously based in the Dublin division.

Garda Elliot Malone from Wexford town served in the army for four years prior to joining the gardaí. He served ten years in the Carlow division before his current move to Gorey.
