Codd returns with a good double

-

JAMIE CODD returned to competitive action at Downpatrick on Saturday after his injury break and scored a winning double, with Blackwater’s Harley Dunne also winning two as the Wexford connections made the long trip worthwhile.

Codd’s first came in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden on Denis Murphy’s Whatsupwithyou, improving on his recent second at Tinahely. They were a long way clear of Simon Cavanagh (Blackwater) on September Venture for C.W.J. Farrell, Bunclody.

Codd completed his double on Gordon Elliott’s Kruzhlinnin in the Open race, well ahead of Rob James on Donnchadh Doyle’s Art of Logistics. This was the horse’s fifth win of the season, with Barry O’Neill having been on board for three of the others.

There was a Blackwater success in the five-year-old mares’ maiden, with Harley Dunne scoring on Shane Byrne’s Achy Breaky Heart, ahead of Barry O’Neill on Colin Bowe’s Alice O’Byrne and Rob James on Donnchadh Doyle’s Madera Mist.

Luke Murphy (Inch) was in contention until coming down at the last on his dad’s Frank and Honest.

Dunne completed his double on Lisnagreggan for Antrim trainer, William Gault.

There was limited Wexford success at Sunday’s two meetings. Aaron Sinnott (Enniscorthy) was pipped by a short head on Martin Corrigan’s (Blackwater) Glencoum Lass at Dungarvan in the five-year-old mares’ maiden, with Jamie Codd another short head away in third on Denis Murphy’s Rare St Diamond.

Luke Murphy (Inch) won the last on Colin Motherway’s Shanacoole, the horse returning after a 14-month absence.

There was just a couple of Wexford seconds at the Scarteen Hunt meeting at Kilfeacle – Barry O’Neill on Sam Curling’s (Tipperary) For the greater good ina mar es’ maiden, and Shuil Luas by Rob James for Tom Keating (Clonmel).

Codd and O’Neill drove to Naas for the bumper where Codd was second behind a Paul Nolan winner.

Next weekend sees the first of the important four-year-old maidens of the year, with some of those expensive purchases from last summer starting to appear, at the Wexford Hunt meeting at Moorfield, Ballinaboola, and at Belharbour, Co. Clare, and they also run at Carrigtwohill in Cork.
