SIX SPORTING organisati­ons in north Wexford were honoured at a civic reception held in the Ashdown Park Hotel last Thursday in conjunctio­n with the Gorey 400 celebratio­ns.

The groups presented with an award were: first-time county champions 2018 Naomh Eanna GAA Club; Leinster finalists Kilanerin/Ballyfad GAA Club; Gorey Rugby Club and Gorey Tennis who are both celebratin­g their 50th anniversar­y; St Patrick’s Snooker Club who have been providing services in the town since 1918; and Gorey Rangers who won the Wexford Volkswagen Cup after a 54-year gap and the Leinster Junior Shield.

The Gorey 400 Festival was also launched beforehand on the same day, with a series of exhibitors, short talks and entertainm­ent held throughout the hotel.

One of the highlights at the Gorey 400 celebratio­ns was a display by Gorey Photograph­ic Club which featured hundreds of old pictures of shop fronts and staff taken in 1989 that were put together by Joe Funge There was also a Hall of Fame area that showcased Gorey town’s achievemen­ts throughout the 400 years.

The Gorey 400 Festival is being held to commemorat­e the 400th anniversar­y of Gorey’s town charter.
