New Aer Lingus CEO’s strong Co Wexford roots
THE new Chief Executive Officer of Aer Lingus Sean Doyle has strong County Wexford roots, with his father Oliver hailing from outside New Ross.
Cork native Sean took up the reins of the world renowned airline – used by tens of thousands of Irish people every week – in January, replacing Stephen Kavanagh in the role.
Mr Doyle, 47, was a director at British Airways, where he worked since 1998. The UCC graduate was appointed to British Airways’ executive management committee in 2016 and was in charge of the company’s network, fleet planning and airline partnerships.
Oliver Doyle hails from Bushpark, Old Ross and Sean is a nephew of Éamon and Seán Doyle. The family have been part of the Old Ross area for generations: his grandfather was the celebrated miller John Doyle.
Oliver and his brothers were all former guards who all played hurling for Rathgarogue Cushinstown GAA Club and also at inter-county level for Wexford.
Oliver was eventually based in Youghal where he goes by the nickname Willie. He lined out for various Cork teams, while Eamon is actively involved in a number of Kilkenny teams and set up the No Name Clubs with Eddie Keher.
The family of Seán Snr are well-known musicians playing with orchestras all over the world, as well as Wexford Festival Opera and tutoring at the Cork School of Music.
