Jail for assault on taxi driver

-

Two months in jail was prescribed for the 42-year-old man who attacked a taxi driver collecting a fare from the estate where the defendant resided.

Damien Fox from 122 Meadowgate, Knockmullen, Gorey pleaded guilty at the District Court to an assault committed in August of 2017.

Sergeant Gary Rayner gave a summary of what occurred after Fox approached the taxi on the date in question.

The accused began to punch the driver through the side window of the car.

When the injured party opened his door, he was kicked.

The taxi man was left with marks to his hand, face and leg, but sustained no lasting injuries.

The defendant, a father of four children, was totally unreasonable in his behaviour, reckoned Judge Brian O’Shea. The assault occurred in the presence of an innocent bystander, noted the judge. A two month prison sentence was handed down and Fox was brought by gardaí to the courthouse cells.

However, he later posted bail and was released pending his appeal against the sentence.
