Gorey’s Caoimhe selected for Irish Girl Guides’ Lego team
A YOUNG girl from Gorey was selected to be a part of an Irish Girl Guide team that competed in the First Lego League Finals in Dublin City University last week.
Caoimhe Crean (15), of Seashell Senior Branch Gorey, spent several months working on a project with other girls from across Ireland that explored how astronauts cope with homesickness.
The team, made up of Irish Girl Guide members from Cork, Clare, Limerick, Wexford, Kildare and Dublin, met five times for full day workshops in DCU’s Lego Innovation Studio. They chose the team name CLWKD as it uses the initials of the counties they all come from.
Caoimhe said during the First Lego League she made loads of new friends and loved the challenge of communicating with people from all around the country.
As well as developing a research project based on identifying a human, physical or social problem faced during long-du- ration space exploration and proposing a solution, the girls also had to design, build and programme a robot to undertake various challenges on a themed playing field during the final.
The First Lego League is an international competition involving children and young people from age 11 to 16 from 80 countries. The teams operate under a signature core set of values, which include teamwork, sharing of experience, discovery, the spirit of friendly competition and co-operation.
