ENNISCORTHY HOCKEY

Ladies 1sts Enniscorthy’s ladies first eleven had yet another victorious Saturday at the Astro Active Centre, coming out on top with a 2-0 win over Dublin team Corinthians in Division 7, and following results elsewhere, found themselves celebrating promotion.

From the starting whistle both teams seemed to be very well matched, however Ennsicorthy quickly began attacking with a very early entry into Corinthians circle from Rynhart just two minutes into the game but were unsuccessful.

However, the hosts set their press well and ensured a tight, compact block to put Corinthians under pressure.

There was excellent play all up the right hand side of the pitch starting from the back with Graham working all the way up front between Chapman, Wickham and Rynhart to secure a short corner very early on in the game.

Enniscorthy were unsuccessful this time but created a great work ethic for the rest of the match. Corinthians continued to put their own on pressure Enniscorthy, giving them something to work for with breaks down both sides of the pitch but failed to get through the strong defense line with some great blocking tackles from captain Julie Watchorn.

Coming from the defence Ennsicorthy worked there way up to the front again with excellent passes between Smith, Ogilvie and Rynhart to finish off a lovely goal from Walsh, 10 minutes into the game. Enniscorthy knew that Corinthians were as dangerous as their league position depicted, and again they attacked hard and fast with numerous entries into the opposition’s circle but to no avail.

Some brilliant tackles from Flood on the left working well with Mahon creating lots of space. Enniscorthy brought on Dunphy and Kelly after 15 minutes, two great additions to the game.

Continuing their attack Enniscorthy again kept the pressure on to ensure positive circle entries with an unfortunate shot or two just wide for Walsh.

Despite the host’s work rate Corinthians managed to win two penalty corners but were unsuccessful. Ennsicorthy’s main priority now was to keep their lead.

At half-time was another addition to the game, Doyle took up the right back position with big boots to fill.

Enniscorthy knew they needed to up intensity and successfully did so in the second half.

Early on, Enniscorthy won a penalty corner but hit it just wide of the posts, a positive way to start the second half.

Work rate, communication and the press all improved massively in the second half with Ennsicorthy wanting to widen the gap.

Some great passes from Flood to Walsh and Rynhart proved to break down Corinthians defence and eventually, the league leaders after much hard work widened the score line with a top class goal from Oglivie traveling into Corinthians circle and finishing it off with a bottom right hand corner goal with just 3 minutes left, to the delight of the home support.

Enniscorthy take on Genesis at noon on Saturday at the Astro Active Centre, hoping to take another step towards a historic league title.

Squad - Norah McGinty, Laura Smith, Hannah Graham, Julie Watchorn, Susannah Doyle, Leah Chapman, Niamh Oglivie, Ciara Kelly, Aoife Mahon, Isabelle Walsh, Sonja Rynhart, Jessie Flood, May Wickam, Nancy Dunphy

Men 1st

The hockey men of Enniscorthy were on the road last weekend with a visit to East Glendalough School on the cards, to take on local rivals Wicklow.

As with all meeting of these sides it was a tough, close game. From the first whistle both sides had chances with end to end action.

It was Wicklow that were first to strike when, just five minutes into they took the lead. Enniscorthy didnt panic, they were composed and strong on the ball with young forwards Dunne and Durnan using their pace to keep the home sides defence on their toes.

Dunne put Enniscorthy on the score board with an unstoppable reverse stick shot mid way through the first half.

The vistors took the lead five minutes before the half time break.

Enniscorthy were awarded a penalty corner, but despite Wicklow’s best efforts they were unable to stop the shot of Rynhart.

Wicklow captain Nuzum was controlling his sides play well and helped his side draw it honours even just before the half-time whistle.

The game at this point could go either way with both sides playing good hockey and linking up well.

Like the first half the home side scored five minutes into the second half, but Enniscorthy bounced back, and just after conceding drew it level once again at three goals apiece.

Again they scored from a penalty corner, with Durnan putting a dangerous ball across the goal mouth for a diving Roy Chapman to get a stick to score the goal.

The remainder of the game was end to end with all players trying to find a weakness in their opposition but to no avail, as it finished with both teams taking a share of the spoils.

Doyle’s men will now have a two weekend break before their next game, when they will welcome Dublin side Pembroke Wanderers to the Astro centre on March 2.

In Division 3, the men’s first team woes continued on Sunday following a 5-3 defeat at the hands of an experienced Rathgar side. The Dubliners swept into a two goal lead before being pegged back by Charlie Dunne’s second goal in two days.

Rathgar, though, scored twice more. William Durnan and Leo Durnan each scored to give Enniscorthy some hope but the Dubliners prevailed.

Gorey beat Muckross with a convincing 4-0 on a blustery day up in Dublin.

After a frantic start where possession rocked back and fourth between Gorey and Muckross attacking.

Gorey eventually broke the deadlock with some accurate passing hockey leading to Muireann Deegan slotting the ball home (1-0).

With the goal and some very good attacking runs by the returning Gillian Bailey, Gorey started to settle into the game.

Gorey’s second goal came from a great run by Muireann Deegan who passed a quick ball to Zoe Kenny who duly pushed the ball past the keeper into the net (2-0). Half-time.

Sadhbh Corcoran made an immediate impact when she came onto the right wing and found herself perfectly positioned to finish off a great passing move between Ailbhe Booth and Muireann Deegan (3-0).

The fourth and final goal of the game came from a strong Ailbhe Booth pass into the circle which was cleverly deflected by Muireann Deegan in (4-0) Despite the lead, Gorey stayed alert to ensure another clean sheet.
