Top athletes honoured
Bree club hold annual awards presentations
THE 48th Bree AC annual awards presentations took place in Bree Community Centre on February 7.
In competition, a total of two national individual medals, 15 Leinster individual medals, five Leinster pairs medals and seven Leinster team medals, 85 county individual medals as well as 16 county relay medals were won by Bree AC athletes in 2018.
Abbie Doyle won her first national indoor individual medal when she was second in the 60m hurdles. Darra Casey won a bronze in the national indoor 60m hurdles.
At the recent Bree AC awards presentation night, Club Chairman William Spratt Murphy congratulated the athletes on their great performances.
He thanked the athletes and their parents for their wonderful support.
He thanked the coaches for their hard work with the athletes. William also thanked Ballyhogue GAA Club, Bree Community Centre and Enniscorthy Hub for the use of their facilities.
A minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect for the Byrne family on the recent passing of Peter who had been involved with Bree AC from the early 1970s both as coach and club official.
Clare Doyle, club secretary, read the citations as each award winner was presented with their trophy. Bree AC ‘Athlete of the Year’ winner Darra Casey (U16) was presented with his award by Club Chairman, William Spratt Murphy.
As well as a national medal win, Darra won Leinster medals in Indoor 60m hurdle and T&F 100m hurdles and 250m hurdles as well as a medal in the Leinster Schools in 100m hurdles.
He won medals at the county championships in 100m hurdles, 250m hurdles, 100m and 200m.
The ‘Tony Greene Merit Award’ winner Olivia Howe (U19) was presented with her award by Fr Billy Caulfield CC.
Olivia won Leinster medals in Indoor 60m, 200m and T&F 100m.
She also won medals in the county championships in 100m and 200m.
The ‘Peter Byrne Memorial Award’ winner Abbie Doyle (U13) was presented with her award by Peter’s daughter Clare Doyle.
As well as her national medal, Abbie won Leinster medals in Indoors 60m and 60m hurdles, T&F 75m hurdles and 80m and team event.
On the county AAI scene she won medals in 80m, long jump and relay.
She was the sprint champion at both the Primary School Sports and Community Games.
She won a fourth place medallion and a relay silver medal in Abbottstown at the National Community Games.
The ‘John Godkin (Best U13) Award’ winner Katie Doyle (U12) was absent on the night. Katie won Leinster medals in 60m hurdles and team event.
On the county scene she won medals in 60m, 60m hurdles, 100m, 600m, long jump, high jump, relays and in cross country. She also won gold in the Primary School Sports 100m.
The ‘Paul Kehoe Merit Award’ winner Lea Bolger was presented with her award by Minister Paul Kehoe.
Lea won Leinster medals in long jump and team event. She won county championship medals in 60m, 100m, 500m, long jump, turbo javelin, relay and cross country.
She was county 100m champion at the Primary School Sports and county 60m hurdles and relay champion in Community Games.
The ‘Pat O’Leary – Distance Merit Award’ winner Jayden Kenny (U10) was presented his award by Pat O’Leary.
Jayden won Leinster medals in T&F 60m, long jump and team event.
He won medals at county championships in 60m, 100m, 500m, long jump and turbo javelin as well as relays and cross country.
He was the sprint champion at the Primary School Sports and 60m hurdles campion in County Community Games. He won the bronze 60m hurdles medal in Abbottstown at the National Community Games.
The ‘Bree ICA – Parish Award’ winner Sophie Codd was presented with her award by Bree ICA President, Breda Cahill.
Sophie won Leinster medals in Indoor 60m hurdles and T&F 100m hurdles.
On the county scene, she won medals at the county championships at 100m hurdles and 250m hurdles and a silver medal in 100m in Community Games.
A bouquet of flowers and picture was presented to Clare Doyle, club secretary, in recognition of her long term service as coach and officer with Bree AC.
Clare was a recent recipient of a ‘Leinster All Star Award’ in gratitude of her dedication to Wexford and Leinster Athletics.
