Gorey Tidy Towns plant 600 willows trees to form four living sculptures

-

Eagle-eyed motorists may have spotted four new wooden structures in the picnic area on the Courtown Road.

They are living sculptures which were planted recently by Gorey Tidy Towns, and as they grow they will form distinctive shapes.

The six hundred willow saplings were sourced by the Gorey Town Rocks initiative from the Trees for Wexford Scheme. They were initially intended for Ramsfort Wood, but when the planned site was found to be unsuitable the picnic area on the Courtown Road was chosen instead.

They were planted by Gorey Tidy Towns CE Scheme and Tus workers and volunteers, with the support of town gardener Maura Higgins and district manager Amanda Byrne. Helen Reddy provided topiary lessons to the workers on the day, and they will return to the site to shape the sculptures as the willow takes root and grows.

Gorey Tidy Towns is currently working on a number of projects to celebrate Gorey 400 and anyone who wants to volunteer is asked to contact any member of the committee.
