Data protection could hinder action on dumping

-

ANY hope that bin service providers can help Wexford County Council by furnishing details of who their clients are has been binned following a decision made by the Data Commissioner.

This was the view of Fine Gael Cllr Willie Fitzharris who, speaking during a debate on a plague of dumping occurring across the county, said: ‘The Data Commissioner stated that they would not be in favour of bin service providers giving information as this could hamper a court case.’

Councillors called for the Government to back a move to ensure tenants have to show they are responsibly getting rid of their waste and recycling. Cllr Tony Dempsey said he finds the council’s environment team are very responsive to reports. ‘Littering has become a plague and cameras definitely improve the situation. I think we should be lobbying our TDs to change the legislation regarding data protection.’
