CLUB CALL

-

S.B.R. A.C.

It was a quiet weekend on the roads for S.B.R.

Pat Crean and Frances Murphy took the short journey to Graiguecullen in Carlow for the 5k and 10k Challenge. Pat ran in the 10k and finished in 33rd position, with Frances taking on the 5k in 29:02.

Claire Gibbons was the sole club member that took part in the Gorey Parkrun on Saturday morning, finishing in a time of 24:50.

The fourth round of the S.B.R. winter league took place in Ferns on Wednesday evening. There was a good turn-out of runners again, with brilliant competition for places and times taking place all the way through the field.

It was the one-mile race this time, which encompassed almost a lap and a half of the ‘V’, and it saw Paul Lynch back on the winning trail in the men’s division.

There was a titanic battle for the ladies’ win, with Ciara Bowe just shading it over Lillian Lawless, after great running by the two women.

There was a change in team standings at the top, but with only eleven points separating the first four teams, the race for top team could go any way over the next few weeks.

Please note that there will be no league tomorrow (Wednesday, February 20) due to the Gorey Night Run taking place on Thursday evening, and the Wexford Novice road races taking place on Sunday.

The league will re-commence on Wednesday, February 27, with a twomile race.

The Novice road race takes place this Sunday, hosted by United Striders, with the ladies’ race starting at 12 noon over 3k, followed immediately afterwards by the men at 6k.

We encourage every eligible runner to take part, as your one place might just make a difference to the team at the end.

GOREY HOCKEY

Gorey played host to U.C.D. 7 on Saturday in Enniscorthy’s Astro Active Centre.

U.C.D. took push back and entered Gorey’s circle for the first time, winning a penalty corner immediately.

U.C.D. set up, taking a shot from the top of the circle. Gorey’s Bridget Kenny and ’keeper Fiona Mythen saved the initial shot but were unlucky when the ball deflected up into the goal.

Gorey re-started and won a penalty corner. Robyn Swords pushed out, and Sarah Merrigan slipped the ball left, with Nicola Ryan taking a shot but it was saved by the ’keeper.

Ailbhe Booth tapped the ball through the ’keeper’s legs, and Zoe Kenny was there to finish it off (1-1).

U.C.D. re-started but lost possession in midfield. Gorey applied pressure, winning a series of penalty corners.

A Gorey set-piece from Sarah Merrigan and Nicola Ryan gave them the lead heading into the half-time break.

Gorey re-started the second-half, maintaining the larger amount of possesion. On the day, Gorey were too strong.

Gorey made changes, which lead to further goals from Zoe Kenny, Sarah Merrigan and Robyn Swords.

Gorey are back on the road next weekend to take on Trinity in their next league match.

E’CORTHY HOCKEY

Saturday saw Enniscorthy ladies’ second XI, positioned top of Division 12, travel to Serpentine Avenue to take on Pembroke Wanderers.

Unfortunately for the visitors, they were beaten 1-0 by a very strong Pembroke side in an exciting contest.

Pembroke got off to a good start with early chances worked in through a tight Enniscorthy defence. D’Alton and Bolger worked seamlessly together to ensure the home side remained scoreless.

A great save by Medcalf after a penalty corner opportunity meant Enniscorthy were very much in the game.

A determined Aine O’Brien fed some great balls up the left side of the pitch through Neville, Larkin and Parnell. Enniscorthy’s efforts, however, went unrewarded as both teams remained scoreless at the interval.

The second-half saw more intense competition between the teams, both with an eager eye on the league title.

Brilliant play through the pairing of Redmond and Creed, along with skilful work by Murphy, saw the play in Pembroke’s half throughout the second section of the game.

Unfortunately, a strong play down the right-hand side of the field saw Pembroke work through Enniscorthy’s defence, putting the finishing touch on the play, sending the ball into the goal. Pembroke were 1-0 up with not long left to go.

Despite O’Brien, Kelly’s and Doyle’s efforts at penalty corner attempts, Pembroke’s defence proved too strong for Enniscorthy.

Although slipping from top of the league, it is still all to play for next week as Enniscorthy face Portrane at home in the Astro Active Centre on Saturday.

Squad: Alice Metcalf, Ellen Creed, Eleanor Bolger (capt.), Aine O’Brien, Amy D’Alton, Hannah Neville, Laura Redmond, Caoimhe Larkin, Eimear Doyle, Amy Murphy, Alice Kelly.

The Under-16 girls’ Intermediate ‘A’ side travelled to Rathfarnham and a meeting with Loreto on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the Junior Jacqui Potter Cup.

With just 15 minutes on the clock the Dublin side took the lead, one which they retained over the remainder of the match.

It was an uncharacteristically flat performance from Enniscorthy, and no doubt there will be great disappointment in the camp after last season’s heroics.

Squad: Norah McGinty, Eabha Farrell, Beibhin O’Brien, Rebecca Doyle, Ellie Kehoe, Niamh Ogilvie, Leah Kidd, Rebecca Ogilvie, Isabelle Walsh, Caoimhe Larkin, Eimear Doyle, Amy Murphy, Faye Codd, Caoimhe Quigley, Abby Byrne, Laura Sutton.
