GOREY CENTRAL STUDENTS SOW SEEDS FOR THEIR FUTURE

- By CATHY LEE

THIRD class students at Gorey Central School have been named as the runner up Incredible Edibles out of more than 1,300 schools across the country, taking second place in the competition which was run by Agri Aware, Ireland’s agrifood educational body.

As their award, the class received a VIP visit to Country Crest farm in Dublin, where they were taken on a guided tour and also enjoyed goodie bags of fruit and potatoes.

The students learned all biodiversity and sustainability measures on the farm as well as visiting Country Crest’s wind turbine and seeing first hand a cattle feeding unit.

‘It was fantastic achievement to be recognised for our work and we would like to thank Agri Aware and Country Crest for their support with this initiative. Incredible Edibles has taught our children many valuable lessons including self sustainability, environmental awareness and also the importance of supporting locally grow and sourced produce,’ said Principal of Gorey Central School, Matthew Baker.

‘Initiatives like these help us to provide children with unique learning experiences and allow new interests to grow. A huge amount of credit has to go to Mrs Copeland for her work on this project and a big thank you to the class as they are a credit to themselves, their families and the school.

Impressed with the efforts of Gorey Central School, Country Crest presented a poly tunnel to the school to help them to continue their gardening journey.

‘It’s brilliant to see how these young school children have embraced the Incredible Edibles project, their enthusiasm for learning how to grow fruit and vegetables and their appreciation of healthy seasonal food and where it comes from,’ said Michael Hoey of Country Crest.

Agri Aware is a charitable trust with a mission to improve the image and understanding of agriculture, farming and the food industry among the general public, conveying the importance of this industry to Irish life.

Next year’s Incredible Edibles project will launch on Friday, October 4 and for more information and to register, you can visit the website on www. incredibleedibles.ie.
