Murphy’s making strides

-

FR. MURPHY’S ladies enjoyed a busy summer, travelling far afield from their London base.

They moved to a new training ground in Boston Manor in the spring, and at the end of July a party of 25 travelled to Waterford for the World Games.

It was a brilliant week and a great bonding experience for many of the new players. The tournament itself and the venue were excellent.

Fr. Murphy’s had a team in both the camogie and ladies’ football, with some girls playing both. All were exhausted by the week’s end, but an absolutely fabulous time was had by all.

During breaks from our matches, the girls were able to watch the London-born hurling team which made it all the way to Croke Park, a team which contained several Fr. Murphy’s lads.

The club are very grateful to Ben and Dan Brosnan of Bodibro, our kit supplier, who produced our fantastic leisurewear for the tournament.

We have now started up our weekly lotto, with the jackpot currently standing at £1,450. It can be played online, and we would hope many of our players and supporters will have a go at it.

We are grateful to DRS Bond Management for sponsoring this lotto.

The girls took part in the Monica Dee Memorial Cup and Shield, a seven-a-side football tournament, at Greenford on Saturday.

The club’s youth hurling initiative started by the late Tommy Harrell R.I.P. from Horeswood, and carried on by his son, Martin, and daughters, Sinéad and Orla, is flourishing.

Recently 160 youngsters turned out at Greenford for the Tommy Harrell Memorial blitz.

It was a great day, with competitions for as young as Under-6 up to Under-15, as well as a poc fada competition in each age group.

John Diviney of sponsors Ground Construction Ltd. was on hand to present the medals and trophies, one of which commemorated his late father, Seán.

With the Fr Murphy’s hurling team going very well in the London Intermediate championship, it has been a productive year for the purple and gold thus far.
