Enya drops in on her old music teacher

October 1992

-

Singing superstar Enya, the world’s second biggest album-selling Irish artist, paid a visit to Loreto Abbey in Gorey on Friday last for a reunion with her former music teacher, Sister Eveleen Hallahan, who is now teaching at the school Gorey.

Sister Eveleen taught the singing star Enya Ní Bhraonin from Gweedore in Co. Donegal when she was a student at the Loreto Abbey in Milford in Co. Donegal for a number of years during the 1970s.

Enya, who has had a number of hit records in the UK, is second only to U2 as the biggest selling Irish artist in the world – and that makes her bigger than Sinéad O’Connor.

Her album sales have reached 10 million worldwide, and it is interesting to note that all three albums contain some songs in the Irish language. It is Enya’s intention to continue this policy.

Enya, who was formerly a member of the folk group Clannad, arrived by chauffeur driven car and spent several hours at Loreto Abbey. The main purpose of her visit was a reunion with Sr. Eveleen and she presented her former teacher with a bouquet of flowers. She was given a rousing welcome by the Loreto Community and the students.

A very unassuming personality, the megastar of music spoke to the combined students of the school and she had an extremely busy time signing autographs for the 300 students. She ran out of photographs of herself to sign but is to send on autographed copies to the students who missed out, and she made a note of the messages to be included on them. She also donated some of her CDs to the school.
