TAGHMON-C’ROSS GLYNN-BARNTOWN 0-13 0-9

TAGHMON-CAMROSS finished stronger to seal the Junior ‘B’ camogie championship at the expense of Glynn-Barntown in Bunclody on Sunday.

In an extremely tight game, the sideswerelevelonnofewerthan four occasions in the second-half, only for Taghmon-Camross to have a little bit more energy in the tank than their opponents in the final ten minutes.

Taghmon-Camross dominated the opening exchanges, racing into a three-point lead by the 18th minute (0-5 to 0-2).

Clodagh Kent was their most in-form shooter and she put away four points and assisted Jessie Doyle for her only score as Glynn-Barntown struggled to keep pace with their fast-starting neighbours.

Cora Doyle and Cora Rowe points had given Glynn-Barntown a small piece of impetus in those early stages, but it wasn’t until Doyle and Emma Sweeney pointed in quick succession that they got a handle on their opponents.

While Doyle scored late into injury time to level the sides up at the break (0-5 each), the major talking point of the half was undoubtedly Ian Plunkett’s decision to only show a Glynn-Barntown defender a yellow card after an incident involving an opposition player.

Lucky to have all 15 on the field to re-start the half, Glynn-Barntown battled hard and matched Taghmon-Camross for the opening 20 minutes of the second period.

They very nearly scored a crucial goal moments after the restart when Doyle connected with a bouncing ball, only to see her effort fly over the crossbar from close range.

Doyle was on target again soon after, she scored a brace of frees before Grace Roche got her name on the scoresheet, pointing a dead-ball from distance in the 49th minute.

Kent continued her rich form by scoring her side’s first four points of the half, ensuring that with ten to play the teams were level again (0-9 each).

At this point the game was there to be won by whichever side could find the energy to maintain their intensity levels.

Sarah Banville set the tone for the final ten minutes. Her surging run out from defence resulted in a well-taken point, and that piece of individual brilliance seemed to inspire the rest of the Taghmon-Camross girls.

Kent scored twice more in the remaining minutes and Ciara Banville added another from play as Taghmon-Camross took the Junior ‘B’ title back home with them.
