Selskar College going green by planting trees

-

STUDENTS at Selskar college are playing their part in promoting National Tree Week this year which is encouraging people to ‘plant for our planet’. The students recently gathered in the college grounds to launch their Green Schools Initiative by planting several trees.

‘It is important for everyone to start somewhere in saving our planet. We need to involve as many young people as possible in initiatives in saving the planet,’ said student Anna Zwierzchowska, who is a member of the Green Schools team.

‘Even in small and simple ways, we are teaching them a new mindset. A mindset that could help future generations survive.’

Another member of the Green Schools team, Keithin Codd, pointed out the importance of planting trees.

‘Every tree we plant is another breath of fresh oxygen for another fresh generation. Our Earth used to be in the majority forests and wildlife.’

‘Now it’s an atrocious mess of unhealthy greenhouse gases that are causing our environment suffering and despair.’

Both students were unanimous in their praise of Greta Thunberg, who has driven climate change onto the agenda globally and proved a major source of inspiration for many students at Selskar College.

Acting Principal John Connolly said that the Green Schools initiative has really increased the students’ awareness of the challenges being faced by our environment. He also pointed out that the students had developed a special ‘Green Hub’.

‘Basically, it’s a student lead initiative in the college which has seen the installation of a specially designed courtyard area in the college which is intended as a special climate conscious creative zone,’ he explained.

‘It’s aimed to inspire and cultivate our school’s Green programme.’

‘We are proud of our students for taking such a strong stance on such an important issue and we will be delighted to continue to support them in any way they need.’
