NEW ROSS SENIORS

Light intermittent rain which gave way to sunshine and a strong south-westerly wind, that was the weather report from Tinneranny on Thursday.

Maybe the Met. Eireann forecast kept players away, nervous perhaps that the rain might come down in torrents, but thankfully we escaped all that and ten teams took part in our weekly outing.

As the day progressed, we even saw some blue skies and an odd burst of sunshine, enabling everyone to finish their game without any resort to rain gear.

With winter rules in vogue for the first time this year, we expected high scoring, even considering underfoot conditions which were a bit on the soft side. What we did not expect was a runaway win by any team, but that is what we got.

Led by the man from Marley, Michael Kavanagh (17), with John F. Roche (22), Jamesie Murphy (24) and Martin Burke (25), this Carlow/Wexford/Kilkenny/Tipperary combination brought in a fantastic score of 102 points - 49 on the front nine and 53 on the back nine.

Finishing second with an excellent 92 points were Jimmy Furlong (13), Denis Kirwan (14), Michael Gannon (18) and Tony Sexton (23).

The 90 points scored by Pat Doyle (17), Larry Shannon (21), Frank Boyle (23) and Michael Long (23) proved good enough to claim third prize.

Nearest the pin prizes were won on the ninth hole by Hughie O’Connor, and on the eleventh by Philip Walsh.

This week’s competition is a 16-hole singles stableford, sponsored by McCabe’s Pharmacy.

On Thursday, October 10, after another busy year, we had our final presentation of the year and it was great to see such a big turn-out of ladies in the club.

With all competitions now complete, it was time to present the winners with their well-earned prizes.

The silver spoon is awarded to the member of the club who returns the lowest aggregate of three nett strokeplay scores in a qualifying competition, and this year’s winner was Ruth Kennedy (you may start to see a theme developing here…).

The winner of the bronze medal (handicap 21-36) for those who return the lowest aggregate of four nett scores in I.L.G.U. medal competitions was Brigid Furlong.

The silver medal winner was Ruth Kennedy who played consistently well in all competitions. Both medal winners go forward to play in the national finals early next year.

Birdie tree competition (tweet tweet!): Category A (0-18), Ruth Kennedy, 37 birdies; Category B (19-28), Mary Walsh; Category C (29-36), Pat Flanagan; Category D (37-51), Mary Hatton and Mary Rackard.

The winners and finalists of our matchplay competition, sponsored by J.J. Devereux, were also presented with their prizes.

This year again, in order to allow our higher handicap ladies to gain experience of matchplay circumstances, a competition for 37-plus handicappers was held. The winner was Brigid Furlong who played Elaine Bolger in the final.

The winner of the J.J. Devereux Matchplay Cup was… Ruth Kennedy! The runner-up was Geraldine Draper, and our semi-finalists were lady Captain Martina Gately and Ena O’Donoghue.

Once again well done to the finalists and all who competed. We are especially grateful to J.J. Devereux for their continued support and sponsorship.

As may have been guessed from the previous results, we had a runaway winner for the golfer of the year award, with Ruth Kennedy taking the honour with a 30-point margin, to be awarded the Irene Dowdall Memorial Cup.

The cup was presented to Ruth by Elaine Dowdall, with members of the Dowdall family present.

Congratulations to all the prize-winners, and particularly well done to Ruth on an outstanding year of great golf!

The A.G.M. for the ladies’ section is Monday, November 18, and the A.G.M. for the full club is Monday, November 25.
