Restrictions delay distribution of spring clean essentials to public
COUNCILLORS heard that there has been an increase in visits to civic amenities sites during the lockdown and that the council is still getting reports of illegal dumping.
New registrations for the national spring clean will be taken from June 8 and the council is asking that the public be patient, as they have been unable to provide people with required bags, gloves and litter pickers during this time.
‘We stopped taking registrations as the advice was for people to stay at home and that advice is still the same generally. We can’t ask people to travel to recycling centres to collect bags from us but we can take bags from people and we are doing collections. It has been hard to refuse people at this time,’ said Cliona Connelly from the environment section.
Some community beach clean ups have taken place, while Cllr Fionntán O Súilleabháin and Cllr Diarmuid Devereux said that cleaning in small groups within the set five kilometre radius should be encouraged.
‘In Clough and Ballyoughter, there have been clean ups with rubbish being kept in storage. People are going to continue cleaning up their communities for the rest of the year, it’s something that has happened during the Covid crisis and it’s something we should encourage as best we can,’ said Cllr Devereux.
Those who spot illegal dumping or are in need to bags to be collected are invited to call Wexford County Council customer services.
