Man tried to steal trolley of goods worth over €1,100

-

A MAN who attempted to steal a trolley load of goods worth more than €1,000 from Dunnes Stores was given a jail sentence when he appeared at Wexford District Court.

Myles Doyle (27), 81 Pearse Road, Enniscorthy, admitted the theft when he was brought before Judge Brian O’Shea in custody on Tuesday, May 26.

He also pleaded guilty to several other charges, including counts of theft and driving without insurance.

His own solicitor described as opportunistic and mean-minded the theft of a bag from a fellow passenger on a bus running between Dublin and Wexford.

CCTV showed the defendant removing the bag belonging to Wexford-bound Ethan Boyle from the luggage hold when the accused disembarked in

Enniscorthy one day in November 2018.

Boyle reckoned that the value of everything which was taken amounted to around €270 but only his passport was recovered.

Another theft was committed on March 19 this year when the accused drove a silver Nissan up to the pumps at the Apple Green service station in Ferns. Not only did he fail to pay for €15 worth of fuel, he also helped himself to €90 worth of groceries.

As he was disqualified from driving at the time, he could not have been insured.

Shortly afterwards on the same day, the same vehicle arrived at Dunnes Stores in Gorey where Doyle entered the shop and began filling a trolley. The haul included batteries, DVDss, razors and clothing, more than 100 items in all, worth a total of €1,185.

He was intercepted after leaving without paying and all the goods were recovered.

Solicitor Ed King stressed that his client was with another person that day.

A record of 50 previous convictions was brought to the court’s attention. The list featured seven counts of driving without insurance as well as counts of burglary and theft.

Doyle was sentenced to two months in jail for the bus stop theft; three months in jail for driving without insurance in Ferns; and six months in jail for the Dunnes Stores theft.

A charge alleging possession of diamorphine (heroin) was denied and it was adjourned to a later date for hearing.
