Carnew GAA challenge raises fantastic €11,000

- By EIMEAR DODD

A charity event in aid of Carnew Community Care is on target to raise over €11,000.

The fundraiser was organised by the Carnew Emmets GAA Club in aid of the local service, which supports elderly people in the community. With its daycare services curtailed due to Covid-19 restrictions, Carnew Community Care and a group of volunteers put in place a Meals on Wheels service to provide a hot meal to elderly people living in Carnew, Shillelagh, Tinahely and Coolboy.

Members of the men’s, ladies’ and juvenile clubs and club supporters took part in a challenge to run, walk or cycle a combined 1,000km on Saturday. May 23 and Sunday, May 24. Those taking part completed over 2,334 km over the two-day period. Staff, volunteers and residents of Carnew Community Care also took part and challenged themselves to complete 50 miles in five days. The residents covered a distance of 152 miles over five days while staff and volunteers completed 362 miles.

The initial fundraising goal of €5,000 was reached on Thursday, May 21. As donations are still being received, the total amount raised for Carnew Community Care has yet to be announced.

Separately, the Tinahely GAA have also launched a fundraiser to support Carnew Community Care. The club is asking members to challenge five friends to complete five repetitions of any type of exercise. They are hoping to raise €5,000 to support the Carnew centre.
