Concerns raised as two beaches are difficult to access

- BY ISABEL COLLERAN

AT a recent Gorey Kilmuckridge District meeting, Cllr Mary Farrell asked that the boardwalk at Morriscastle Beach be regularly maintained as the beach can be difficult to access when the boardwalk is not tended to regularly.

“It’s every year. I know it’s a boardwalk and the nature of a boardwalk but it’s the sand and it’s the tide coming in but this is the accessibility point of getting onto Morriscastle beach and when the tide comes in and the boardwalk is washed over, it makes it very difficult and sometimes nearly impossible to get onto the beach.”

“We have a beach wheelchair down there and there’s no point in having a beach wheelchair for disability access if we can’t actually get onto the beach with the boardwalk,” said Cllr Farrell.

Cllr Farrell also highlighted that a large number of people swim at Cahore beach regularly and they’re finding difficult to access the sea as the rocks with the tide.

“Is it possible to have a look at that maybe create a space that they can actually walk through without trying to climb over the rocks to get onto the beach,” said Cllr Farrell.

Cathaoirleach Pip Breen informed Cllr Farrell that money has been granted from the Board of Works to repair the beach armour in Cahore.

“It’s going to make it a very different beach, if they don’t put the protection there, there’s no point in protecting the carpark. We haven’t had a north easterly storm for seven years but we can get one any time and they can come in threes and they could take the car park out of it again,” said Cllr Breen.
