MAY BUSH & MAY ALTAR

Just a reminder that today, Wednesday, is the First of May and what we regard as the first day of Summer.

Traditionally, people decorate the May Bush, (white thorn or sceach) on May Eve or May Day, using painted egg -shells, ribbons and streamers of all kinds. Many people, reared in the Catholic faith, erect a May Altar in their homes to honour Mary, the Mother of Jesus, in the month dedicated to her, while for many years the late Gay Byrne maintained the tradition of playing Fr. Sydney McKeown’s recording of “Queen of the May” on 1st May. Both traditional customs can and should be practised and promoted.

On Wednesday the 24th. of April, the St. Cormac’s U-13 boys’ team claim the league title with a game still in hand. They beat Shelbourne by 5-1 in the game and were three goals ahead at the break with the score at 4-1. Ruaraí Larkin netted three tiemes in the game and Ben Reddy added the other two. With one game in hand, they hope to finish the season with another victory.

The previous Sunday, the men’s team were away to Camolin and shared the points thanks to a 2-2 draw. They were 1-0 up inside the first five minutes thanks to Jamie Dempsey-Doyle vollying a free kick taken by Jamie Richardson. Jamie double the lead shortly afterwards, collecting a great pass from Jack Ellix before rounding the keeper. Camolin never gave up and by the interval had halved the deficit. They drew level soon after the resumption and stout defence from our lads thereafter, ensured that they shared the points.
