ALL THAT GLITTERS IS
If you’re looking to cut a dash this Yuletide, sequins and sparkles are where it’s at.
The festive season is upon us, and you know what that means! Time to slip on your shiniest ruby shoes and skip right on down that sparkly golden road to search out the Emerald City – yup, it’s sparkles and sequins and shine, oh my!
Sequins and sparkles covered the catwalks this year – and you know glitter, once it appears on a surface, is there forever. Tom Ford set the stage for a sparkly trend as he kicked off fashion week with a slew of evening-ready looks, from slinky gowns with embellished sleeves to super-short mini dresses covered in crystals. Michael Kors went full-on glamour with his silver and gold evening gowns, featuring long sleeves and a tight, body-skimming fit for pure elegance. Sachin & Babi were a little more adventurous, going for Cleopatra baths of gold, as their draped sequin dresses hung from their models like a golden waterfall cascading down the catwalk.
Monse went for a more urban vibe, creating basketball-style dresses covered in sequins and worn over pants for an effortlessly cool city hipster look. Greta Constantine went for more of a throwback, with her ’80s glam featuring multi-coloured sequin slouchy pants, ultra-structured shoulders, and dramatic tulle sleeves on her short and tight sequin party dresses. And who could forget Marc Jacobs’ mystic wonders, as he presented full-length, full-sleeve, high neck eleganza parades of shimmering mermaid tones, complete with dramatic turbans and elbow-length gloves. It was pure fortune teller glam, and we were here for it.
With the official shiny stamp of approval from the fashion gods, how could you possibly wear anything but sparkles, shimmers and sequins come your Christmas or New Year’s party? If you want to be clever and make sure that your sparkly pieces can remain versatile throughout the year, look for separates that can be mixed and matched.
Sequin pencil skirts can be made formal and show-stopping when paired with a lush top at the office ‘do, but can be easily dressed down with a white t-shirt when the mistletoe comes down – or even a crisp white shirt if you want to evoke the fabulous fashion editor vibe, which Michael Kors was showing on his catwalks. Sparkly rompers, meanwhile, lend a playful twist on the classic party dress, and can be worn with shiny heels over Christmas, then made cool with tights, ankle boots and a denim jacket in the spring.
