Recog­nis­ing ex­cel­lence and achieve­ments among the univer­sity’s 100,000+ grad­u­ates world­wide, the NUI Gal­way Alumni Awards – now in its 20th year – drew more than 500 at­ten­dees, dressed in their fin­ery, to the Bai­ley Allen Hall to toast this year’s win­ners. The red car­pet was rolled out for a cham­pagne re­cep­tion with a per­for­mance by Mac­nas be­fore ev­ery­one sat down to din­ner and MC for the evening Gráinne Seoige – a previous awardee her­self – kicked off the pro­ceed­ings. Jour­nal­ist and RTÉ Lon­don cor­re­spon­dent Fiona Mitchell, avi­a­tion entreprene­ur Dómh­nal Slat­tery, se­nior coun­sel and ju­rist Grainne McMor­row, can­cer sci­en­tist Dr John Lyons, sur­geon and clin­i­cal ed­u­ca­tor Dr Ro­nan Waldron, jour­nal­ist and broad­caster Póilín Ní Chiaráin, and sports medicine pioneer Dr Mick Mol­loy joined the list of dis­tin­guished hon­orees, which in­cludes Pres­i­dent Michael D Hig­gins. As if that weren’t enough, guests were treated to a per­for­mance by Paddy Casey.
