FIVE STEPS TO HELP YOU AVOID A FEUD

-

1 Discuss your intentions with your family. As with most things in life, communication is key.

2 Consider appointing a family mediator. According to Mediate Ireland (mediateireland. com), mediation should be used in any dispute involving wills, inheritance or probate.

3 Make a will. It sounds obvious, but according to The Law Society (lawsociety.ie), only 27 per cent of Irish adults have made a will. This is the first and foremost step to ensuring that your wishes are carried out.

4 Make sure your will meets your legal obligations (ie that your spouse is included as per Irish law).

5 Appoint an executor. Be sure to appoint someone you know and trust, and make sure they are happy to take on the responsibility.
