A design for life

A new gin has hit the Irish market, but are you bold enough to take it into your home?

In 2019, our spending habits are showing a preference for luxury items, especially when it comes to home décor. Interior furnishings like widescreen TVs, and drinks trolleys – up 136 per cent* – are filling the modern homeowner’s living room. And if you’re splashing out on a trendy bar cart, you need something equally as modern to fill it with. Enter Ireland’s newest addition to the gin market – Method and Madness Gin – a micro-distilled spirit hailing from Midleton Distillery in Co Cork.

From the ingredients right down to the octagon-shaped bottle, this gin was made to be different. A drink for the go-getters, self-starters, and shape-shifters who dare not to conform.

Containing 16 eclectic botanicals, led by black lemon and Irish gorse flower, Method and Madness Gin has premium notes of citrus and spice, with a measure of chaos.

The bottle itself is shaped like an octagon, and has a unique Irish back story. Irishman Matthew Bolger and his wife Emelie Lidström, from Sweden, brought a little method to the madness in creating the octagon design.

Together Matthew and Emelie run a design studio from Malmö, called M&E.

Speaking about creating a unique design for the bottle, they said, “The juxtaposition between the two themes was a very interesting starting point. We wanted to make a bottle that celebrates the liquid and the process behind it.

“In particular, we wanted to ref lect the craft behind the gin in the design of the bottle. This result is a touch of minimalism with a slight laboratory inf luence.”

Method and Madness Gin aims to harness the creativity of Midleton’s whiskey masters through the fresh talent of its apprentices. Inspired by a line from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet – “Though this be madness, yet there is method in ’t” – the gin is designed to ref lect a next generation Irish spirit brand with a measure of curiosity and intrigue, while honouring the tradition and expertise grounded in the generations at the Cork distillery.

“It was an amazing opportunity to be a part of a new brand coming to life,” said M&E. “The challenge of translating the love and hard work behind the brand into a visual identity was a great experience.

“We are very happy with the bottle itself. We love its small tactile elements and we love how the light refracts through it and brings out the details.”

Not just for taste, Method and Madness Gin is a must-have addition to every drinks trolley this Christmas… and beyond.
