One of the most important factors in managing menopause is having support – the support of family, friends and also your boss. Menopause in the Workplace will be one of the many issues addressed at the Menopause Success Summit, brought to you in partnership with Cleanmarine MenoMin.
Would you be comfortable telling your boss you are experiencing menopausal symptoms?
Lorraine Keane has been sharing her perimenopause story for the past five years in the hope that it will inspire other women to do the same. “One of the most important factors in managing menopause is having support to deal with your symptoms, the support of family, friends and even your boss and colleagues,” says Lorraine. “Women stop me on the street to talk about their menopausal symptoms, but they do not want to talk to their partners or friends and dare not mention it at work. There is so much work still to be done to normalise menopause, develop supports and access to solutions, so that women can thrive through this stage of life, enjoy their families and friends, and stay in the workforce. The experience of older women is invaluable in the workforce, as is their role as mentors to younger generations.”
One woman working daily with workplaces in Ireland to establish supports for women in menopause is Wellness Warrior Catherine O’Keeffe. “It’s unfair how women going through the menopause are often met with a lack of understanding and empathy in the workplace. With decades of experience working as a corporate director, I know what it’s like to juggle career and health. At 44, I was in perimenopause but didn’t realise it. I put it down to corporate burnout and my own lack of ability to cope. Misunderstanding and lack of information about the menopause – not just from HR or management, but the whole organisation and female workforce themselves – can contribute to anything from dips in performance to absenteeism, and in some cases, loss of employees.
For many workplaces, menopause is still overlooked and it shouldn’t be – implementing practical changes and offering the right supports can make all the difference to women during these years. We are seeing seeds of change and menopause being recognised as a women’s health and wellbeing issue. It is imperative now we keep the focus and spotlight on this topic.”
