Irish author Sally Rooney to publish fourth novel "Intermezzo" this September

-

Irish author Sally Rooney will publish her fourth novel "Intermezzo" in September this year.

Sally Rooney's latest work, which will be published by Faber on September 24, focuses on the complicated relationship between two brothers in the wake of their father's death.

Brothers Peter and Ivan Koubek have very little in common. Peter, a success‐ ful Dublin lawyer in his 30s, has seen his life unravel following the death of his fa‐ ther and is now medicating himself to sleep. He is also struggling to balance relationships with two different women - his first love Sylvia and college student Naomi.

Ivan, on the other hand, is a 22-year-old competitive chess player who has al‐ ways seen himself as socially awkward and the complete opposite of his older brother.

Dealing with the death of his father, Ivan finds himself in a relationship with Mar‐ garet, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past. Intermezzo is a story of brothers and lovers, of familial and romantic intima‐ cies, of relationships that don’t quite fit the conventional structures. - Faber Books (@FaberBooks) February 29, 2024 Faber Publisher Alex Bowler described the novel as a "story of brothers and lovers", adding that Intermezzo repre‐ sented an "exquisite advance" in Rooney's career.

"Intermezzo is a story of brothers and lovers, of familial and romantic intima‐ cies, of relationships that don’t quite fit the conventional structures," Bowler said in a statement.

"After three miraculous books, Sally Rooney’s millions of readers will recog‐ nize the beauty and insight, the pain and hope that radiates from this new novel. But it marks an exquisite advance, too, in the work of a writer who seems so at‐ tuned to our lives, our hearts, and our times."

Rooney's first two novels "Conversations with Friends" and "Normal People" have been adapted into television miniseries, while her third novel "Beautiful World, Where Are You" was released in Sep‐ tember 2021 to widespread critical ac‐ claim and became a New York Times Bestseller.
