Fulbright Ireland presents Dr. Anthony Fauci with Public Service Award
Dr. Anthony Fauci was awarded the Ful‐ bright Ireland Public Service Award 2024 by the Fulbright Commission at reception at Dublin Castle on Thursday evening, April 18.
Fulbright Board Chair Emerita Professor Diane Negra, Fulbright Board Chair Pro‐ fessor Paul Donnelly, and Fulbright Commission Ireland Executive Director Dr. Dara Fitzgerald presented Dr. Fauci with the Fulbright Ireland Public Service Award 2024. The Fulbright Commission in Ireland said it presented the award in recognition of Dr. Fauci’s outstanding contributions to public service.
“It is an honour to present Dr. Fauci with the Fulbright Ireland Public Service Award 2024," Professor Diane Negra, Fulbright Board Chair Emerita, said on Thursday.
"His decades-long advocacy for public health, including his response to the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and in more re‐ cent times his presence and resolve during the Covid-19 crisis, mark him as an outstanding recipient of the award. "Dr. Fauci vividly exemplifies the core Fulbright commitment to meticulous, sustained, and high-quality research and expertise in service to the public good. This award recognises the immense val‐ ue of his advocacy for science and clar‐ ity of his public voice.”
Dr. Dara FitzGerald, Executive Director of the Fulbright Commission in Ireland, added: “The Commission is pleased to present Dr. Anthony Fauci with the Ful‐ bright Ireland Public Service Award 2024. "The Fulbright Program is one of the pre-eminent educational and cultural exchange programmes in the world. Dr. Fauci said: “I am deeply honored to receive the 2024 Fulbright Ireland Pub‐ lic Service Award.
"I and my Irish-American wife, Dr. Chris‐ tine Grady, have very much enjoyed our visit to Ireland, which we were very pleasantly anticipating.”
This is the second award Dr. Fauci re‐ ceived while in Ireland this week. On April 17, he was awarded the Stearne Medal by the Royal College of Physi‐ cians of Ireland for his outstanding con‐ tribution to public health.
The Fulbright Commission in Ireland is a bilateral partnership supported by the Irish Government’s Department of For‐ eign A airs and the US Department of State. The Commission annually awards grants for Irish citizens, and EU citizens resident in Ireland for over five years, to study, research, or teach in the US and for Americans to do the same in Ireland. Since its formation, over 2,500 post‐ graduate students, scholars, profession‐ als, and teachers have participated in the Fulbright Program between the U.S. and Ireland.
The Fulbright Ireland Public Service Award is conferred annually by the Ful‐ bright Commission in Ireland to a person who demonstrates outstanding commit‐ ment to public service, education and cultural exchange, and cross-cultural collaboration and/or who contributes to finding solutions to global problems. Dr. Anthony Fauci served as US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Dis‐ eases (NIAID) Director from 1984 to 2022. He oversaw an extensive re‐ search portfolio of basic and applied re‐ search to prevent, diagnose, and treat established infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections, diar‐ rheal diseases, tuberculosis, and malar‐ ia, as well as emerging diseases such as Ebola, Zika and COVID-19. He also led the NIAID research e ort on transplan‐ tation and immune-related illnesses, in‐ cluding autoimmune disorders, asthma, and allergies. Dr. Fauci was awarded the 2008 US Presidential Medal of Freedom and the 2022 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding.
