The power of a well-chosen wardrobe

FASHION COLUMNIST AND INFLUENCER JOANNE HEGARTY

Heading into spring there’s always a thrilling sense of renewal in the air. Not much happens in January when the calendar officially marks a new year. Rather it’s March that brings with it that feeling of a fresh start. Time for the annual spring clean, personal rebooting and general taking stock of who we want to be and how we want to dress.

Never underestimate the power of well-chosen clothes to open doors and cultivate opportunities. And initial impressions are so much about appearance because our full personalities are hidden away until we have figured out whether we have common ground with the person opposite us.

A great example of this is the compelling Netflix series Inventing Anna, based on the true story of how a young woman used the right clothes to swindle elite

New York society. While I’m not suggesting you do that, her success illustrates how clothes are a vital tool in winning people over. It’s not about expensive clothes either. It’s about pulling yourself together in a way that makes you feel powerful.

Come spring, I always have a long list of chic pieces and style ideas that I want to bring into the new season. Here is this year’s…

★ A statement dress Many independent brands reported a dress-buying frenzy last March which helped lift them out of the pandemic. Women want to dress up even more in 2022. I am already looking for the special few to get me through the season. Personally I am all about clean lines when it comes to dresses. But whatever floats your fashion boat, there is something out there for you. On my list already for a beach holiday is a burnt orange one from Savannah Morrow. And I’m currently searching for a dress in that perfect shade of green – a big colour this season.

★ Fine jewellery I intend to finally start that grown-up collection this year, saving up and investing in special pieces to keep. I already have a Tiffany Elsa Peretti jade and gold cocktail ring on my wish list. ★ Versatile flats or slides These will go with summer dresses and holiday playsuits.

★ A white trouser suit Nothing looks more chic than an understated sexy white suit worn with gold jewellery and a tan. I’m waiting for the right occasion…

★ Jackie O-style sunnies Nobody did Riviera chic quite like this First Lady and I already have my eye on a Tom Ford pair that are just the ticket!
