AGELESS STYLE

WARDROBE STAPLES FOR EVERYONE BY FASHION DIRECTOR SHELLY VELLA

-

Meet the grown-up alternative to tie-dye – ombré. A more sophisticated take on colour graduation, this is where two colours gently merge to create a striking effect. Perfect on summer’s floaty dresses, ombré is also great for those who, like me, aren’t enamoured of strong prints but want something a little bit different.

The trend for voluminous sleeves isn’t going away, and while some styles can be irritating – think trailing in the dinner or washing-up – these ones fasten at the wrist, offering a flattering cut with good old practicality, too.

A statement piece isn’t just for special events. Styled down with trainers and minimalist accessories, this dress is everyday ready. Add a lightweight trench for tricky between-seasons weather.

Consider platform shoes. Styles with a sturdier heel and supportive ankle strap are super comfy.

DO

Keep accessories muted in colour so they don’t clash or look shouty against the dress.

A more undone hairstyle and natural make-up will keep this look contemporary – a little boho in spirit.

Try sourcing a vintage belt (like this one) from a charity shop to add a special touch, while also cinching the waist.

Remember delicate fabrics need special care and a green dry cleaner is your best friend when you want to preserve the colour and finish.

FOR SIMILAR try Phase Eight’s Piper ombré maxidress, €165, johnlewis.com, or stylecheat.com’s Toni pleated maxi dress, €87.

DON’T

Shy away from unusual colour combinations such as peach and green – you will be surprised by how versatile they can be with your existing wardrobe.
