Embrace the new season, naturally

Pet peeves. We all have them. Mine? Perfectly healthy pedestrians who walk in front of you at a snail’s pace, blocking the entire pavement. Noisy chewing. People who are always late (I seem to know a lot of them). Pushy sales assistants: no thanks, I much prefer to be left alone to browse in peace. Loud people, who I’ve discovered over the years I really can’t do – it’s too draining trying to get a word in edgeways and life is just way too short.

When it comes to fashion, I have a few peeves, too. First up, dungarees on grown women. If you own a pair, please don’t hate me – I’m sure they look great on you – but I just don’t get the allure of them at all. Lots of women seem to love wearing them, so maybe I’m missing something? But unless you’re at a potter’s wheel, making like Demi Moore in Ghost, decorating your house or perhaps proudly pruning your roses, I think dungarees should be left hanging in the kids’ department. Because while denim dungarees do, without a doubt, look adorable on little girls with pigtails, they make the rest of us (apart from children’s TV presenters) look like infant women.

All-day Lycra is another of my style bugbears. I love a good pair of leggings for the gym or jogging, and can totally understand chucking them on for the school run. However, all-day, everyday Lycra when you’re only pretending you’re always on your

way to the gym is just wrong. I don’t want this column to be all about peeves, though. And a thing that’s definitely not making me feel peevish this month is the return to natural fabrics such as organic cotton and linens, thanks to the arrival of spring.

Designers and the high street come back to linen every year – we just need to learn to relax about the wrinkles. Consider it part of the beauty of the look.

Personally, I love wearing one piece of linen with a more structured item like a blazer or jeans to balance it out.

And when it comes to celebrity dressing this spring, can we take a moment to admire Jennifer Aniston’s (left) ultra-chic grown-up wardrobe.

She’s by far one of my favourites when it comes to always getting it right at an event. Her recent appearances in New York and Paris to promote her new Netflix comedy Murder Mystery 2 highlight her carefully defined style, loyal to the same wardrobe foundations since the 90s. And it works.
