Lanzarote? Wish you were here

- By Michelle O’keeffe Mainly dry with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Cold at night with frost and fog where cloud breaks.

WE may not be used to such good weather in Ireland at this time of the year – but no one will be disappointed to hear that the glorious sunshine is to continue until the weekend.

With mid-summer conditions defying the calendar, children enjoyed ice-cream and office workers ate their lunch al fresco in the sun yesterday.

Lisa Callaghan and Louise Mcgarrigle were among the throngs who hit Sandymount Strand in Dublin yesterday.

And while Ireland basks in a mini-heatwave, it’s cloudy for holidaymakers in places like Barcelona, Hawaii and Lanzarote.

A Met Éireann spokesman said the weather is unusual for March but could not predict if the warm weather was an early sign of a hot summer ahead.

The glorious weather is due to an area of high pressure that would usually be hovering over southern Spain, the Canaries and north Africa. It is expected to be dry and sunny again today with temperatures hitting 19C. Met Éireann forecasts that tomorrow will be dry, bright and warm with it heating up to between 15C to 18C.

There is expected to be a slight dip in temperatures on Friday, with clouds beginning to appear in the clear blue sky we have been getting used to.

Despite the fact the north east of the country is expected to become a bit dull, it will remain bright with sunny spells in most places with the mercury reaching 16C. However, if sun-worshippers are planning to spend Saturday or Sunday at the beach, they might find it a little bit chilly, as l i ght northerly winds ar e expected.

Still, families should still get a chance to fire up their barbecues and get out the sun loungers over the weekend, as temperatures are to rise to 15C.
