Everton star prays for Tweet relief

- By GARETH MAHER

AFTER making headlines for the wrong reasons on Twitter, Shane Duffy could be about to feel the full wrath of Everton manager David Moyes. The Derry native was at the centre of a Twitter storm when provocative messages were sent from his official account on St Patrick’s Day, but Duffy has stated he did not post the comments. The Republic of Ireland Under 21 captain claimed that someone took his phone and wrote the tweets which saw him receive sustained abuse on his account. Duffy (right) apologised for the incident but could now face a reprimand from Moyes, as the Toffees boss has a history of punishing players who are deemed to breach club rules. ‘It’s progressing and should be sorted soon,’ said Duffy. ‘Everyone knows it wasn’t me sending those tweets. I’ve apologised for someone using my Twitter account. ‘He took my phone and it’s got me into trouble. I’ve nothing more to say, as it will make more out of it. I’ll just have to deal with it, we will discuss it,’ he added. Duffy, 21, also needs to discuss his future with Moyes following a frustrating season, where he has only made three substitute appearances for the Premier League side. While the giant defender has three years left on his contract, he suggested that he might be forced to move on in order to secure first-team football — but it all depends on Moyes’ plans. ‘That depends on his future as well,’ admitted Duffy. ‘There’s been a lot of speculation about whether he’ll stay or leave in the summer. So, next summer, I could be gone somewhere else or might be playing in the Everton first team. ‘It’s frustrating because the ones [players] in there deserve to be playing. Those who are playing every week know the manager has belief in them and that helps them. I’m nowhere near it at the moment. ‘A loan is out of the question at this stage. I’ll see out the season at Everton and assess it then.’
