Mcgeever asks judge to cut €12,500 bail demand

- By John Fallon

KEVIN McGeever, the man who allegedly faked his own kidnap, has been told to go to the High Court if he wants his bail terms improved.

The former millionaire developer, 68, appeared at the district court yesterday and asked for a reduction in the amount of bail money required so he could be freed from custody.

Mr McGeever is accused of wasting Garda time over his claims to have been kidnapped.

He was arrested in Clontarf, Dublin, on Tuesday, before being taken to Gort in Co. Galway where he was charged.

Bail was set on Wednesday at his own bond of €2,500 and independent surety of €10,000, with a minimum of €3,000 of the total to be in cash.

Joan Devine, defending, yesterday told Judge Geoffrey Browne her client was not in a position to come up with sum of €12,500.

She asked that the amount be reduced to allow Mr McGeever a chance to come up with bail. But Inspector Pad-

‘He can’t raise all that money’

raig Jones opposed the request, saying the charges were serious and the bail was ‘reasonable’.

The judge told Ms Devine she would need to go to the High Court to change the terms.

Mr McGeever, wearing jeans with a collarless white T-shirt and red jumper, did not speak during the brief hearing at Harristown District Court in Co. Roscommon.

He has been held at Castlerea Prison, Co. Roscommon, since Wednesday and was yesterday remanded again in custody.

Mr McGeever, with an address at Craughwell, Co Galway, appeared before Strokestown District Court on Wednesday. He is accused of wasting Garda time between January 29 and February 28 this year.

Judge Browne remanded McGeever in custody with consent to bail to appear before Harristown District Court on August 9.
