Please don’t lose your hair, ladies

- By Emma Lowe reporter@dailymail.ie

QUEEN Elizabeth’s hairdresser is adamant that women in their mid-40s and beyond are making a big mistake by cutting their hair short to try to turn back the clock.

His most famous client has worn her hair in pretty much the exact same style for decades, but Ian Carmichael says women of a certain age wrongly believe they are too old for tousled tresses.

And he chose Live And Let Die

‘The queen is my favourite client’

actress Jane Seymour, who at 62 still looks glamorous with long locks, to illustrate his point.

‘Women in their mid-40s and 50s at one time would rush to cut their hair off. It was like they became wives, mothers, a “certain age” and they cut it all off,’ he said. ‘But actually hundreds of women – as long as their hair is healthy and in good condition – look much better with soft long hair.

‘Jane Seymour, for example, is a woman of a certain age who has worked having lovely long hair.

‘If she had had it all cut off at the age of 40 she would have lost her sex appeal years ago.’

Mr Carmichael, who started his hair- dressing career in his native Scotland as a 16-year- old trainee, went on to deride the boyish pixie crop sported by Anne Hathaway as the worst haircut of the past year.

The US actress sacrificed her long locks for her Oscar-winning role as Fantine in the film musical Les Misèrables.

‘It really doesn’t do a lot for her features,’ Mr Carmichael said. ‘Much like Julia Roberts, her mouth is far too big for a short haircut.’

The 51-year- old, who tends the queen’s hair twice a week and has done for 15 years, added: ‘Of all my clients, the queen is by far my favourite, she has wonderful hair.’
