...meanwhile, Supermac’s chips make US fast-food list

- By Aisling Scally

MOST people would consider America the home of French fries, but US fast-food fans can’t get enough of Supermac’s chips.

Instead of their culinary curiosity being piqued by native cuisine such as boxty or Dublin coddle, it is the large range of fries that Supermac’s offers which has Americans salivating.

Now, the USA Today newspaper has included Supermac’s in its article of the top foreign franchises they want to move to the States.

Its rave review reads: ‘Supermac’s says its menu is designed “with Irish tastes in mind,” but, don’t worry, it’s not all shepherd’s pie and Guinness. Supermac’s serves the typical fast-food burgers and chicken tenders, but what we’re jealous of is the amazing frenchfry menu: Get yours smothered in garlic sauce and topped with cheese, or go big and bold with curry or taco fries.’

The author questions how the home of fast food could not have ‘these amazing foreign fast-food chains’ within its borders – saying they wish Supermac’s would move Stateside ‘ASAP’. And while there are no immediate plans to bring Supermac’s to the US, thousands of our expats Down Under could soon get to once again chomp on an Irish-produced Supermac’s burger.

In January, Supermac’s boss Pat McDonagh confirmed that he received six requests from Australia to start franchised Supermac’s operations there.

On the planned Australian expansion, Mr McDonagh said that he hopes to open one outlet this year in either Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, and that he would hope to open a further two next year and two in 2015.

Last November Fox News praised Super- mac’s for pioneering ‘curry chips and the snack box craze in Ireland’. This article also focused on the chips, marvelling at the ‘eight different varieties of french fries – including coleslaw, taco, curry, and cheese fries’.

Completing the top ten fast-food outlets in the USA Today report were the Wienerwald chain in Germany, Austria, Turkey and Romania; Chicken Licken in South Africa and Botswana; Kaati Zone in India; MOS Burger in Asia And Australia; Max Burgers in Europe and the Middle East; Pizza-La in Japan; Ichiran in Japan; Toast Box in Singapore; and Max Burgers in Europe and the Middle East.
