- By Philip Ryan

A 16-YEAR-OLD girl was killed after the car she was travelling in collided with a Dublin Bus coach yesterday evening.

The incident happened on a dangerously narrow stretch of the Greenhills Road in south Dublin.

The teenager was a passenger in a car that collided with a No.27 bus at around 5pm. She was brought by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital where she later died from the injuries she sustained.

A 19-year-old man who was driving the car was also injured in the crash and his condition was last night described by gardaí as serious.

The bus driver and a passenger were also treated for shock in hospital.

Last night, gardaí were still investigating the cause of the two-vehicle crash which happened on a winding stretch of road off the Walkinstown Roandabout. The road remained closed yesterday evening as forensic specialists carried out a detailed examination of the vehicles involved in the collision. A Garda spokesman said: ‘They [the forensics experts] will be working there for a while.’

A Dublin Bus spokesman last night confirmed the bus involved in the crash was travelling from Clarehall in north

‘It’s quite narrow along that stretch’

Dublin to Jobstown in west Tallaght.

‘The bus was heading towards Jobstown when the accident happened,’ she said. ‘There were seven passengers on the bus at the time and the driver and one of the passengers was taken to St James’s Hospital where they were treated for shock.’

She added: ‘We will be carrying out our own investigation into the accident and also co-operating with the gardaí in their investigations.

‘We will review our CCTV footage to see actually what happened.’

South Dublin County Councillor Dermot Looney last night offered his condolences to those involved in the crash. ‘Horrified to hear that the collision earlier on the Greenhills Road was fatal. My thoughts are with the bereaved family,’ he said.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Mail, the Labour councillor added: ‘There was lots of thundery storms all day so I’d say the road would have been greasy.

‘It’s quite tight and narrow along that stretch of the Greenhills Road.

‘There is a footpath along one side of it but you can’t really expand it because of the businesses that are there.

‘There is long-term plans to divert that road and it looked like it was going to happen years back but the recession put an end to that even though the plans are still there.’
