What a Bumer... How cider giants got their lines wrong

- By Michelle O’keeffe

THEY are famous for their witty adverts and clever marketing campaigns. But how about them apples – those innovators at Bulmers aren’t half as smart as they think.

Perhaps their creative juices weren’t on full flow, but bosses at the cider giant gave the goahead for thousands of advertisements for their summer promotion to be distributed – with Bulmers incorrectly spelt.

Pubs across the country have received the company’s promotional packaging with the spelling blunder, ‘For Your Chance to Win: Enjoy A Bottle

‘They are being recalled’

Of Bumers’. The promotional material containing the typo has been recalled. A spokesman for the firm, who are based in Clonmel in Co. Tipperary, said: ‘There were about 2,000 of the promotional packaging sent out.

‘They are being recalled and new ones are being sent to pubs and nightclubs that got one with the spelling mistake.

‘It was just simply human error and it is being rectified.’

She added that no employees have been disciplined over the embarrassing mistake.

The blunder left punters entertained, with one in McManus’s Bar in Dundalk, Co. Louth, saying: ‘We had a good laugh over it – fair enough making a spelling mistake with a word, but to misspell the company’s own product that t hey are promoting is hilarious.’

Another said: ‘I would have thought that considering they are such a big company that a mistake like that would have been spotted before they were printed and sent out to pubs.’

The campaign was for Tunes, which will see the firm giving away almost one million tracks to music lovers across Ireland.
