ACE ENGLISH MAKES MARK IN SINGLE LAP

- DAVE HOOPER reports from Santry

MARK ENGLISH wrapped up a sublime weekend by taking 400 metres silver at the Woodie’s DIY National Championships yesterday. English clocked the second-fastest 800m time by an Irishman in London on Friday night, and then stepped down to 400m and claimed second behind Brian Murphy. Murphy successfully defended his title, albeit by only 13-hundredths of a second. ‘Silver medal today!’ said English (right) with a smile. ‘Brian knows how to run 400s — I ran it like a quick 800, I still have some lactate in my legs.’ Paul Robinson took his first Irish 800m title earlier in the day and he hopes English’s time in London will open the door for him to travel to the World Championships in Moscow when the team is named this morning. ‘I think it’s hard not to select me,’ Robinson said after running a 1:48. ‘I think I can get out of the heats in Moscow.’ Robinson, like Rose-Anne Galligan and Brian Gregan, will be hoping to be selected on B standards — a concession that was not granted by Athletics Ireland selectors for last year’s London Olympics. Meanwhile, siblings Jessie and Thomas Barr reclaimed their 400m hurdles titles yesterday in the space of 10 minutes. Jessie powered to victory in 57:48 before brother Thomas (49:78) got the better of Jason Harvey.
