Pensioner dies after stabbing attack at city apartment

- By David Raleigh

GARDAÍ have launched a murder investigation after a pensioner died following a stabbing at his home.

Father-of-three Patrick Redmond was found by gardaÍ in a critical condition inside his apartment at Mount Kennett Place, Limerick City, at around 2am yesterday.

The 65-year-old, a Dublin native who had been living in Limerick for a number of years, was taken by ambulance to hospital where he died from his injuries at 8am. A post- mortem examination conducted yesterday evening at University Hospital Limerick confirmed that he sustained a single stab wound in the back.

It’s believed a kitchen knife was used during the attack.

The victim, who was living alone, was estranged from his wife. They have three daughters.

The inner city apartment block is located just off the Dock Rd, a stone’s throw from Henry Street in the city.

A resident of the apartment block - who did not want to be named – said that she was frightened living in the complex.

‘My first reaction was I was shocked. I was shocked and scared,’ the neighbour said.

‘I don’t feel safe in these apartments. I have lived here for three years,’ she added.

Gardaí, after receiving a phone call alerting them to the building, discovered Mr Redmond in a serious condition.

The first-floor apartment of the fivestorey building remained sealed off as a Garda forensic team continued to conduct examinations

Door-to-door enquiries were continuing in the apartment complex and outside the building at a number of business premises last night.

A dedicated garda unit were also working on securing CCTV footage from the area.

No one had been arrested and gardaí have detected no clear motive for the attack. Gardaí would not comment on whether a weapon had been found.
