Sherwood fights on but Levy is keeping Spurs’ options open
DANIEL LEVY is keeping his options open about the managerial position at Tottenham as Tim Sherwood fights for the job long-term. The Spurs chairman, who has been seduced by the prospect of bringing in Louis van Gaal or Mauricio Pochettino, will wait until the end of the season before making a decision on Sherwood’s future. Van Gaal, currently Dutch national manager, has already met Levy about the job. The 62-year-old will be available after this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. Argentine Pochettino is also said to be interested in the Spurs job but his contract at Southampton is so water-tight that it will be difficult to poach him from St Mary’s. Despite the temptation to appoint yet another foreign manager at White Hart Lane in the summer, Sherwood wants a fair chance to prove he is a top boss. He is currently working with the players he inherited from Andre Villas-Boas and has not had a chance to make changes he believes are necessary to transform the existing squad. Levy was not at Stamford Bridge for Spurs’ 4-0 capitulation to Chelsea, but is unconcerned by his manager’s claim that the players lacked guts. Despite massive investment in the squad last summer following Gareth Bale’s departure, Levy has accepted that the squad is nowhere near good enough for the top four. Sherwood has his own plans in the summer to make significant changes to the squad, but it largely depends on Levy’s backing. Sherwood will make changes to the Spurs team on Thursday as they prepare for their Europa League clash with Benfica.
