Aisle be... a Lotto winner! €6m ticket sold in Tesco

- By Liz Farsaci

IT was a case of supermarket sweep at the weekend when the €5.9million Lotto jackpot ticket was sold in Tesco.

The prize is worth €5,900,958 in total and the ticket was bought at the Tesco Shopping Centre on the Ashe Road in Mullingar.

The winner, or syndicate, spent €16 on tickets. And they can claim their prize from the National Lotto office in Dublin today.

As the identity of the winner remained unknown yesterday, speculation was rife in the Co. Westmeath town.

A manager at the Tesco store, where the winning ticket was bought, told the Irish Daily Mail yesterday: ‘There’s a lot of excitement now this morning. There’s a large customer base, so it’s hard to know who it is.’

The shop will now receive a €15,000 ‘agent bonus’ for selling the winning ticket.

Customers at Dolan’s Bar on Dominick Street were yesterday checking their tickets to see whether they were the lucky owners of the magic numbers, though there was ‘no one jumping around the place’, according to one barman.

The winner has 90 days to collect their prize from lottery headquarters.

This isn’t the first time that a winning Lotto ticket has hailed from Mullingar. In 2013, Carol Loran and Kevin ‘Sham’ Geoghegan won €10.6million.

There have been a number of major Lotto winners already this year.

Over the Easter weekend, a family syndicate from Trim, Co. Meath, won the €11million jackpot after buying a €4 Quick Pick ticket.
