Was Coronation Street’s young mother storyline true to life?
COULD the real-life baby Maria story be similar to that of Coronations Street’s ongoing plotline about a young girl struggling to accept that she is a mother?
Viewers of the popular ITV soap watched as 12-year-old Faye Windass, played by Ellie Leach, discovered she was pregnant after noticing considerable weight gain.
At the time when her suspicions were piqued, she was supported by her school friend, Craig Tinker, and he encouraged her to take a preg- nancy test. Faye was then left in turmoil when the test was positive, leaving her too frightened to tell her closest friends and family that she was pregnant and so swearing her faithful friend Craig to secrecy.
Last month Faye gave birth to a baby girl and while she was at first reluctant to call an ambulance, she eventually gave in.
During the drama Craig ran to get Faye’s unsuspecting foster mother Anna and her partner Owen and dragged them to the apart- ment above the corner shop, while Sophie Webster, played by Brooke Vincent, was shocked to walk in on Faye in the middle of labour.
However, after the birth, Faye struggled to bond with the baby, leaving mother Anna, played by Debbie Rush, to jump in and assume some of her responsibilities.
As the storyline continues, Anna is determined that Faye will eventually bond with her infant daughter but Faye wants the baby to be put up for adoption.
