Nudists set to confront TDs in bid for ‘decent exposure’
NUDISTS here are showing a naked ambition by arranging a meeting with TDs to urge a law change for nude beaches and other clothes-less activities.
Not even the harsh Irish weather is deterring the Irish Naturists Association from its goal and members will be invited to appear before a Dáil committee to present their case for nudity to legalised in some places. It is expected they will be clothed for the Oireachtas justice committee hearing.
The INA wants naked bathing and other nude recreational activities to be made legal in designated locations, claiming it could significantly boost the tourism industry too.
The Irish Daily Mail has confirmed that the association will appear before the Oireachtas justice committee. It follows the INA sending a detailed submission to Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald pleading its case. A spokesman for the minister said the matter is under consideration as part of upcoming sexual offences legislation changes.
Pat Gallagher – president of the nudists’ lobby group – said they want the law changed to decriminalise appearing nude in public, and allow his members and tourists enjoy naturism without fear of prosecution.
The INA is pushing for the law to recognise the concept of ‘decent exposure’, as opposed to the current state of play where ‘indecent exposure’ is considered a crime.
