Sterling’s going, insists Gerrard

- By RICHARD ARROWSMITH

FORMER Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has f urther criticised his exteam-mate Raheem Sterling, comparing him unfavourably with ‘professional’ Jordan Henderson.

Sterling has angered Liverpool fans by refusing to join the club’s pre- season tour and calling in sick for two days before returning to training yesterday as Manchester City attempt to reach a deal to take him to the Etihad.

Gerrard said that he was disappointed with the Sterling situation, but seemed to hold back f r om expressing hi s thoughts fully.

‘I’d love to be able to say what I want to say on it,’ he added, before admitting he did not see the England winger as a Liverpool player next season.

Gerrard, 35, who has left Anfield to finish his career in the MLS with LA Galaxy, compared Sterling’s attitude with that of Henderson, who replaced him as Reds captain.

‘Raheem and Jordan are at different ends of the scale. Jordan’s so professional, he’s a winner, a great lad,’ Gerrard said yesterday.

‘I don’t think there’s a more f i tting player to take that armband off me. He is a Sunderland boy with the right people behind him, giving him the right advice.

‘I can see him having a wonderful career at Liverpool — and with England as well. I’d love nothing better, while I’m over here, to see him lift a trophy.’

Speaking previously about the Sterling situation, Gerrard continued: ‘I’m not happy with that carry- on. He needs to see the owners. You don’t have to throw an illness, or refuse to go on tour.

‘It’s very difficult for me to support him and the team around him. The only way I can see for him is out.’

City have not been put off by Sterling’s stance and plan a third offer for him after their l ast bid of £ 40million was rejected.

City believe the rift between Sterling and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will enable them to sign the 20-year-old for much less than the £50m asking price.

Liverpool are due to fly to the Far East tomorrow, with their first tour friendly against a Thai All Stars side in Bangkok on Tuesday.
