Morgan ‘OK’ after bouncer hits head
THE rapid changes of fortune throughout Australia’s tour remained to the last yesterday when England blew their chance to stay unbeaten in all series this summer on a day when the dangers inherent in cricket were again emphasised by a sickening injury to Dublin-born captain Eoin Morgan.
The one-day series ended with an emphatic eight- wicket Australian victory in the decider at Old Trafford after bowling England out for 138 in 33 overs.
Morgan was forced to retire after a shuddering blow to the head from Mitchell Starc.
‘Eoin’s got a lump on his head and a headache but he’s okay,’ said England coach Trevor Bayliss. ‘The fact that he walked off was a good sign but he was dizzy for a while and the medical staff will keep a close eye on him.’ GOLF: Belguim’s Thomas Pieters won his second European Tour title two weeks after his first, by shooting a fiveunder 65 to win the KLM Open by one shot as Lee Slattery faltered on the final hole. The 23-year-old Pieters, who won the Czech Masters on August 30, parred the last four holes to finish with a 19-under total of 261. Best of the Irish was Simon Thornton who finished tied for 23rd on -11. ATHLETICS: Mo Farah retained his Great North Run title yesterday after a thrilling battle with Kenyan Stanley Biwott over the half marathon course. Farah completed the course in 59.23 — 37 seconds quicker than last year, with Biwott a second back after pushing him all the way.
It was a close run thing though, with Farah needing an electrifying burst of pace over the final 800m. Kenyan Mary Keitany retained the women’s title.
