Gritty dramas, giggles and music... escape into a box set

- LYNNE CAFFREY

THERE’s nothing worse than missing the latest instalment of the series you’ve been following. Actually, there is — overhearing what happened before you get to see it.

And it’s a feeling more and more of us are experiencing as the popularity of on-demand TV, especially box sets grows. According to Sky, consumers here are now spending up to six hours a week watching ondemand TV content. This figure has more than doubled since 2011, and in the last year alone, there have been more than 32 million downloads of Sky’s ondemand content. But while the attraction of being able to have a weekend binge on a boxset won’t come as a surprise — the shows we’re watching might.

The t op ten downloaded shows in August were a ver y mixed bag. Sons of Anarchy — a violent tale of a US biker gang topped the downloads, but right behind it was Desperate Housewives. Modern Family and New Girl took third and fourth place with sexy vampire tale True Blood next. Old favourites Entourage and Prison Break maintained their popularity, followed by new shows The Strain and Empire. At number ten is gritty gang drama The Wire.

And the most downloaded boxset ever? Game Of Thrones. ÷ GET Sky’s Original TV Bundle and Sky Box Sets/HD pack for €25 per month
